The selective complexation of cationic species was the earliest goal of supramolecular chemistry and continues to attract effort and interest. Over the last five years, Gunnlaugsson and co-workers at Trinity College Dublin have produced a wide variety of colorimetric sensors for ions, nucleic acids and oligonucleotides. In 2004, this group reported the synthesis of a colorimetric sensor for Cu(II) ions (1). This compound functions as a colorimetric sensor for Cu(II) under physiological conditions due to perturbation of internal charge transfer upon complexation (a red to yellow colour change observable by naked eye). Interestingly, the methoxy group present in 1 is essential for this recognition process, as the absorption of compound 2 upon addition of copper(II) in HEPES buffer solution is essentially unchanged.
